Growth and Goal Planning for 2026

Taken together, these steps built a feedback-driven, mindful framework—one that shows the gap between where you are and where you want to go. But here’s the catch: without a plan, insight alone goes nowhere.

2025: What We Learned and Why 2026 Needs Purposeful Planning

As we wrap up the year, I’m looking back at three foundational practices that have helped sharpen my game and can jump-start yours, too:

Self-assessment:
A clear look at where you stand today. As laid out in “Self Assessment – Get to Know Yourself,” I walk through a simple 3-part survey: Skills, Challenges, and Aspirations. That self-scoring (leadership, communication, technical acumen, strategic thinking, etc.) becomes your baseline.

Goal architecture (G.O.A.L.):
In “Goals – Setting Yourself Up For Success,” I flesh out a model built on Growth, Opportunity, Aspiration, and Learning. These aren’t vague New-Year’s resolutions — they’re the four pillars of meaningful, actionable goals.

External feedback (360°):
Finally, “360 Feedback – Why and How to Request It” offers a structured way to gather honest insights from peers, supervisors, direct reports, and other stakeholders — the kind of feedback that helps you see yourself from other vantage points and uncover blind spots you’d never catch solo.

Taken together, these steps built a feedback-driven, mindful framework; one that shows the gap between where you are and where you want to go. BBut here’s the catch: without a plan, insights alone will not lead to progress.

2026: Your Year to Lead Projects and Your Career With Intention
If you’re serious about making 2026 a breakthrough year, here’s a process I recommend:

Run a fresh self-assessment. Rate yourself again across that same skills matrix. Push for honest answers — don’t inflate the numbers just because you want to look good. Use the results to spot real gaps.

Craft 3–5 “G.O.A.L.” statements that matter.
Use the G·O·A·L framework:

Growth: What soft or hard skills do you need to stretch? (e.g. stakeholder communication, risk-management discipline).

Opportunity: Which upcoming projects or roles could be a springboard?

Aspiration: Where do you want to be by the end of 2026; senior PM role? Running your own consulting business? Writing more content?

Learning: What new tools, certifications, or habits do you need to adopt?

Seek 360° feedback now — before the new year gets messy.
Ask peers, team members, and maybe even clients/vendors for honest input on your strengths and blind spots. Use that feedback to refine goals.

Build a plan (not a wish list). Every goal needs why it matters, what success looks like, milestones, resources needed (courses, books, coaching, time allocations), and a deadline.
Treat plan as living document. Review quarterly. Adjust as needed. Let goals evolve — but don’t lose momentum.

Why This Matters (Especially for PMs)

Projects don’t fail because of scope creep or technical difficulties alone; failure often begins with poor clarity, weak communication, misaligned expectations, or leadership gaps. A structured self/peer review and goal-setting cadence plugs those weaknesses before they become expensive mistakes.

Taking time to plan thoughtfully gives you leverage, not just over tasks, but over your career trajectory. Whether you want to run bigger projects, raise your rates, build influence (hey, LinkedIn!), or launch a consulting business, it all starts with clarity.

As a project manager, your credibility rests on consistent self-improvement. Running this cycle annually demonstrates professionalism and discipline, the signal patterns that attract better opportunities, clients, and respect.
