Each year about this time, I usually write a post or two about goals and personal development. Part of my year-end planning for the past seven years has been a goal planning retreat, where a bunch of guys in a local mastermind group go to a remote location, often a cabin or nice lake front Airbnb or VRBO rental. We get away from all the things in our regular daily lives to focus on reviewing our past year and planning out the new one through setting goals. I have mentioned it in previous posts and on the podcast from time to time. You can check out previous goal planning posts at the bottom of this post.
We do our main goals focus at year-end, however you can create goals at any time of the year. In fact we often adjust our goals as the year and life unfolds during the following year, but we start with a foundation. These are not near-year’s resolutions, but actually goals with plans.
This year I am going to do a series of posts on goals and tools you can use to create them, including self-assessments and requesting 360 feedback – something I have done the last 3-years of my career.
I hope you find these posts useful in planning your goals for ANY time of the year.
As I previously shared, I have been doing an annual goals planning retreat for the last seven years, in order to set myself up for some level of success for the following year. Our typical group this year was impacted pretty heavily by the two hurricanes that came through our area, so we have postponed our retreat till after the new year, but we still plan on doing it, and this is my own personal kick-off for the event.
In the LinkedIn carousel, I provided and acronym for the word “GOAL”. In this post, I will expand on it with a little more detail.
G – Growth
O – Opportunity
A – Aspiration
L – Learning
Growth:
Growth is about evolving and improving oneself. It can be personal, emotional, intellectual, or even physical. Embracing growth means stepping out of your comfort zone, facing challenges, and learning from experiences. It signifies progress and the journey of becoming a better version of yourself.
O – Opportunity
Opportunity represents the chances we have to advance and succeed. It’s about recognizing the potential in every situation and being open to new experiences. When you view challenges as opportunities, you cultivate resilience and adaptability, which are essential traits for personal development. By seizing opportunities, you pave the way for new possibilities and horizons.
A – Aspiration
Aspiration is the driving force behind your goals and dreams. It reflects your desires and ambitions, motivating you to strive for something greater. Setting aspirations helps clarify your vision and gives you a sense of purpose. When you aspire to achieve something, you create a roadmap for your growth journey and inspire yourself to take actionable steps toward your dreams.
L – Learning
Learning is a lifelong process that fuels growth. It involves acquiring knowledge, skills, and insights from various experiences, both successes and failures. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning enables you to adapt to changes, innovate, and make informed decisions. Every lesson learned contributes to your personal development and equips you to face future challenges with confidence.
Putting It All Together
By focusing on the four definitions; Growth, Opportunity, Aspiration, and Learning, you create a solid foundation for achieving your goals. Embracing these concepts can lead to a fulfilling journey of self-improvement and transformation. Whether you’re pursuing personal goals, career ambitions, or academic achievements, keeping this acronym in mind can serve as a source of motivation and inspiration along the way.
Feel free to reflect on each word and how it applies to your life and aspirations!

How Learning AI Expanded My Capabilities — and What I Built With It
“That distinction matters. AI tools are often marketed as “anyone can build anything” — which oversells it. What I’d say instead is: if you have genuine domain expertise and real-world experience, AI dramatically expands the ceiling of what you can create.”
