360 Feedback – Why and How to Request It.

360-Degree Feedback is a performance appraisal method that gathers feedback from multiple sources about an individual’s performance, behaviors, and competencies.
Outline for Requesting 360-Degree Feedback

My most recent employment (7+ years) has been with a large international real estate organization, which has a structured review, planning, and promotion system. For the last three years at this job, I decided to start requesting 360 feedback from peers, direct reports, and industry professionals to see how others see me. It is important from time to time to get outside of your own head and see what you look like from others eyes.

Although the bulk of the feedback was positive, which strengthens my beliefs on the good things I am doing, I occasionally received some insight into areas that I could improve on – which really is the bonus value of 360 feedback.

The 360-Degree Feedback process is a powerful tool for personal and professional development. It allows you to gain insights from various perspectives, including peers, supervisors, and teammates. Below is a detailed outline to guide you through the process of requesting 360-degree feedback effectively.

Understanding 360-Degree Feedback

Definition:
360-Degree Feedback is a performance appraisal method that gathers feedback from multiple sources about an individual’s performance, behaviors, and competencies.

Purpose:
– To gain a comprehensive view of strengths and areas for improvement.
– To enhance self-awareness and inform personal development goals.

Identifying the Right Participants for Feedback
Who to Include:

Supervisors:
Direct managers or team leads who can provide insights on performance and leadership abilities.

Peers:
Colleagues at the same level who can offer perspectives on teamwork, collaboration, and communication.

Teammates:
Team members who can comment on contributions, support, and role within the team.

Direct reports:
As a manager, assuming your team feels confident in sharing feedback, this is a great way to see how your team feels about your management style. I have been fortunate to create good relationships with my direct reports, where they were comfortable with sharing feedback without any concerns of backlash.

Industry professionals:
For me, this was/is vendors, contractors, and leaders of other business lines that I worked with, supported, or that supported me.
